As the owner of a wind turbine, you want to be certain about the technical condition of your wind turbine and any maintenance work performed by third parties.

Supervision and inspection work for wind turbines:

Æwind has developed its own supervision and inspection programme for supervision and inspection work on wind turbines during the various project phases, using a step-by-step model.
In the programme, the scope and content of the supervision and inspection work is subdivided into several categories. The following overview presents a brief description per category.

Categories for supervision and inspection work on wind turbines
Category  Description

Technical visual inspection of components accessible without tools:

  • assessing the exterior of the installation with binoculars: tower, engine room, hub and rotor blades
  • the interior of the middle and high voltage rooms
  • tower bottom: lifts, ladders, hatches, controllers and electrical installations
  • tower interior and its connections
  • interface between tower and the main carrier
  • interior of the nacelle and its components: controllers, electrical installations, generator, gearbox, oil and water cooler and rotor lock systems
  • hub: rotor blade connections, blade adapters and blade angle adjustment
  • exterior from the roof of the nacelle: anemometer and wind vane support, hub, rotor blades and top of nacelle

Limited to sensory assessment (by hearing, seeing, feeling and smelling) of the components.


An expansion of the technical visual inspection according to category A by opening hatches, covers, housings, etc. using simple tools. An inspection (internal, if accessible) of pivots, gearboxes, etc., using simple inspection methods such as measuring rods, magnetic rods and fluorescent penetrating liquids.
Various basic control actions are performed during the inspection: stop/start, master emergency switch or switches, manual moving and pitching and continuous operation of the wind turbine for a minimum of five minutes, with the inspector present (if there is sufficient wind to do so).
Attention will also be focused on the most relevant parameters/settings, such as: nominal capacity, settings for noise reduction, availability, error reports and settings for grid connection.

C Expansion of the category B inspection by measurements and endoscopy (the type of measurement to be decided depending on the necessity).
D Expansion of the category C inspection by performing extensive physical tests: stop/start, emergency stop, emergency shutdown, sensors, rotor lock systems, overspeed, etc. (the type of test to be decided depending on the necessity)

Supervision and inspection work is based on checklists drawn up specially for this purpose.

The use of specific checklists ensures that supervision and inspection work is carried out in a focused way and as efficiently as possible. Inspection of all crucial components and aspects of a wind turbine is thus guaranteed.
